Synchronies. Contemporary art intervention projects is a new public art project conceived and produced jointly for the province of Castellón by Espai d'art contemporani de Castelló and Universitat Jaume I. The goal behind the project Tierra de las obras del gaseoducto consists of storing the earth extracted from the works for the gas pipeline that will run through the area with the purpose of creating a mound with the remains of those excavations (earth, sandy clay, and stones). The mound is a reutilisation of waste but it is not only a recycling project but one that also aspires to rethink how people relate with the remains of the past and live with the results of their future projects. The transformations of the mound as it diminishes in size, is covered with vegetation and blends in with the surrounding landscape are a sign of entropy, the changing terrain and its physical features.ew project is to generate a both permanent and temporary art constellation in its geography.

Our primary intention is to encourage a rapprochement with contemporary art in those towns and villages in the province of Castellón which, for various reasons, are generally denied this opportunity. This will be enacted by setting in place relationships between communities, the institutions involved, artists, and the landscape in which they are set. In doing so, EACC and UJI join forces to create a space for the management of these either permanent or temporary projects, which will form part of a collection for the province.

To achieve this aim, the project must be plural and evidently experimental, not restricted to the creation of a specific work of art but instead open to the possibilities each artist will put forward.

Varied in nature, the artistic interventions will be conceived and created for the specific environment they are assigned to. This quality will endow the work with a site-specific quality and fuse them seamlessly into their surrounding environs. Subsequently, their value will depend on the individual setting and its particular circumstances, and this requires an engagement with the context, its history and tradition or, in other words, with its realities.

The municipality of Benlloch has been nominated for this first edition and the selected artist is the Holland-based Spanish artist Lara Almarcegui, who was invited to explore the space of intervention and its context. Central to the whole working process was the commitment of the Benlloch town council and of the officer assigned to collaborate in the initiative, guaranteeing the involvement and sensibility that makes a project of this kind much more feasible.

The artist worked with the specificity of the place and the landscape, conceiving a proposal whose durability will be determined by the passing of time and which is subject to the changes the materials will undergo throughout that period. She has carried out her intervention in an area that is being affected by an imminent transformation, using earth to create a composition integrated into the landscape, and which, like any organic form, blends in with it.
