Wilhelm Sasnal is considered one of the world’s leading artists, working primarily in painting but also in film. His work explores a diverse range of subjects from daily observations of his family to people from history that fascinate him. Take Me To The Other Side explores the influence of the children’s author Hans Christian Andersen on Sasnal. In the 1970s the collected works of Andersen were published in three volumes, translated into Polish and illustrated by contemporary illustrators Janusz Stanny, Andrzej Strumiłło and Jerzy Jaworowski.
As a young boy growing up in Poland, Sasnal was enthralled by these books and the vivid illustrations contained within them have continued to inspire his practice. Take Me To The Other Side brings together 20 works spanning the decade to 2014. Many of these works allude to Andersen but also to Sasnal’s observations of contemporary life, some of which were made during a recent visit to San Francisco.

Alongside the paintings, Sasnal will present a new film piece made specifically for the show at Lismore which explores one of his other passions—music. The exhibition title is derived from a song by the band Spacemen 3.
